ALASKATS CAT CLUB
Promoting the welfare of domestic cats and responsible pet ownership in the 49th State.
Household Pet Cat Owners Welcome!
A Cat Club Chartered by The International Cat Association

What is Alaskats?

Alaskats is a cat club chartered by The International Cat Association (TICA). We are a non-profit club (registered with the State of Alaska) dedicated to those who love cats. Our group includes lovers of household pet cats as well as pedigreed cats.

Objectives

- To sponsor and promote the welfare of all domestic cats;

- Hold cat shows, special programs and promote interest in and knowledge of all cats;

- Cultivate friendship among and promote the interest of owners, fanciers and breeders of cats;

- Encourage responsible breeding toward the TICA standards and encourage registration of cats with TICA;

- Promote and encourage kindness to animal and help in preventing cruelty and mistreatment of animals;

- Encourage the spaying and neutering of any and all cats not being used as part of a viable breeding program in order to reduce overpopulation of, tragedy among, unwanted domestic cats.

Activities

Alaskats sponsor two full Championship and Household Pet cat shows each year. These shows are TICA sanctioned with licensed, professional judges from across the world. Additionally Alaskats sponsors household pet fun shows throughout the year including one during the Eagle River Bear Paw Festival. The shows are designed to provide a forum to encourage pet owners to provide responsible pet care and to promote the spaying and neutering of pets.

The club meets the second Monday of each month at various locations in Anchorage to discuss club business and plan activities. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Call one of the numbers at the end of this flyer to find out the exact time and location.

Alaskats supports the efforts of animal rescue organizations such as the Alaska Humane Society and Friends of Pets. The club tries to provide free space at our shows for these organizations to share their information. Club members also volunteer time and donate resources to these organizations.

Members of Alaskats Cat Club also provide assistance to people looking for a pedigreed cat or kitten. Usually finding out about a responsible breeder is by word of mouth or through national advertising in Cat Fancy or Cats magazines. Responsible, pedigreed cat breeders rarely work through pet stores to sell their animals. Some breed groups even prohibit members from selling to pet stores. We know many of the breeders in Alaska and the pacific northwest and can provide information to help make a responsible, informed decision about purchasing a cat and looking for responsible breeders.

Awards

Cats registered in TICA (including household pets) can compete during a show year for awards for the highest scoring cats, kittens, alters (spay/neuters), household pet kittens and household pet cats. There are awards for the Alaska Region, the Northwest Region as well as International Awards. Cats from Alaska are competitive with the cats throughout the country and world. Cats from Alaska make International Awards almost every year and usually place well within the Northwest Region.

In addition to end-of-year awards, TICA registered cats can earn six levels of show titles Champion through Supreme Grand Champion for cats, alters and household pets. These titles are earned through points received at shows.

Each year the TICA members of Alaska hold an annual awards banquet to celebrate the previous show year and to honor Alaskan winners. At this annual event two special awards are given. The Stan Greenberg award goes to the best championship cat of the year. The Greenbergs were instrumental in promoting the cat fancy in Alaska and introduced many people in Alaska to pedigreed cats. The RC award is given to the best shorthair cat of the year by club members Norm and Gertie Ditsworth.

History

Alaskats Cat Club obtained its charter in 1980, one year after TICA was organized. Prior to 1980, Alaskats existed as a charter club of another organization. Alaskats has a long-standing tradition of promoting felines in Alaska. The club has sponsored a Fur Rendezvous cat show since 1975.

As the only TICA club in Alaska, we have special status in TICA as a sub-region of the Northwest Region. This allows us to give special year-end awards for Alaska. People travel from all parts of the state, as well as all parts of the world to participate in our shows and we enjoy treating them to Alaskan cat shows.

Directors

The Board of Directors is comprised of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The officers are elected from the membership. Members in good standing are eligible and encouraged to run for office in Alaskats. The Board administers the business of the organization with input from the membership. Club decisions are voted upon by the general membership. All members are encouraged to actively participate in club decisions and activities.
